Last week life decided to give me a practical lesson in communication. After swimming regularly at the pool, one afternoon my ears blocked up. I couldn't hear a thing and spent the next couple of days understanding first-hand what it was like to be deaf.

How many languages do you speak? Do you know all the eskimo words for snow? Are you going to correct my grammar? These are a couple of common questions I get when I say to other people "I think I want to be a linguist..."

Dear Miss Linguistics,
Allow me to introduce myself... my name is Jeff and I am a second-year MA candidate studying Spanish phonology. I have a BA in Spanish and a BA in linguistics.
I was sitting here, procrastinating - my first MA exam is on Saturday - and I decided to type "linguistics" - my field of specialty - in the Newsvine "Search" box, and I found you! How wonderful!
So, in order to prolong my procrastination, I am writing this letter in hopes you find it and respond.
In what area of linguistics do you specialize/know the most about? Are you still in school or do you have a job? If so, what do you do?
Well, I suppose out of fear of being considered a creepy Internet stranger I will leave it there.
Sincerely,
Jeff
